A (Zinc Selenide) ZnSe lens is a precision optic commonly used in thermal imaging, high power CO2 laser systems and in the life sciences. At VYi Optics we custom manufacture high quality Zinc Selenide optical lenses to a variety of specifications and in a number of sizes.

What is Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) Optical Component?

Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) optical components are optical elements designed for infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Znse lenses and windows can be used for applications including thermal imaging or FLIR. Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) Optical components are ideal for integration into CO2 laser systems because of its low absorption coefficient combined with its high resistance to thermal shock. However, Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) material are not recommended for harsh environment.

Ideal for thermal imaging

Zinc selenide has low infrared absorption and can transmit light beams in a very wide spectral range (0.6-16 µm). This is conducive to thermal imaging, which can be determined by the black body radiation spectrum of distant objects. Long-wave transmission is very important for the imaging of objects  at room temperature. The maximum radiation wavelength of objects at room temperature is about 10 µm with low radiation intensity.

Heat resistance

With low absorption and high thermal shock resistance,Zinc selenide windows are suitable for environments which requires great heat resistance, that why Zinc selenide windows can be used in high power CO2 laser applications. In addition,these windows can also be used in infrared imaging applications such as scientific, military or search and rescue applications.

Softness of Zinc Selenide material 

Due to the softness of the material, you should only handle it on the edge of the zinc selenide window. Pressure should be uniform to avoid warping. Be careful when cleaning ZnSe optical devices to avoid scratching the soft surface. Dust or lint particles can usually be blown off with a dust-free blower or air ball. If further cleaning is required, acetone or isopropanol can be used to clean the surface. While holding the edge of the optical element, gently wipe the surface with a wet cotton ball. Don't rub or apply pressure. Only use surgical quality cotton balls.
